Now. Privately and out loud, many of us must decide how to deal with a democratically-elected foe to justice, fairness, and humane living. If we opt to stay here in the United States, I hope we will live without fear and that we remain or emerge as powerful predators of Trumpism and everything malevolent.
To those of us who are willing, I hope we decide to embrace a never-ceasing responsibility to starve fear and ignorance wherever they breathe. For those who believe the foundation and framework of one’s human and spiritual powers are anchored to a political party, a fascist administration, a human being (or the control thereof), a material status, the status quo, the pursuit of financial gain, or a trinket of any kind, hopefully you’ll benefit, now or later, from a deeper understanding of what it means to be powerful and free.
To those of us who believe in freedom and who respect the difference between freedom to and freedom from, and to those who believe that our love for living can neutralize, overwhelm, or disempower the forces of harm and death, then let us identify or re-commit our gifts to “the movement,” whatever those gifts may be. Hopefully, now not later.
And maybe retreat for a moment if retreating will help you find balance, gain clarity, and/or steel your resolve. Exhale, replenish and then return, if you can. Please. Return knowing that you are invaluable on this exhausting journey for justice. It is an honorable lineage rooted in our breath, blood, and sacrifice.
To those who would accept this prayer: May we live and move like there are worthy tomorrows in the making. It is true. If we bend, sway, or pause, may we not break. If we cry, grieve, or outrage, may we not be misunderstood. If we fail, may we not be conquered.
